A larger port alleviates pressure right in the middle of the tongue. The space you have to work with inside the Horses mouth is from the bottom bar into the roof which on most Horses is about 11/4" to 11/2" so a port of 1" or 11/4" for most horses is acceptable. remember that any bit that a horse wears is sandwiched between the roof and tht tongue so a Horse has no problem with bits touching the roof of the mouth. This curb bit has a fixed cheek which means there is no play between the mouthpiece and the cheek which is more comfortable for the corners of the lips and makes for a clearer rein signal. The top purchase which is the cheek from the bar of the mouth to the top denotes how much poll pressure you create and the shank which is the cheek from the bar of the mouth to the bottom denotes how much lower jaw pressure you get. This curb bit is comparatively lightweight and slim as the bradoon. More Info
